Abstract

This study first reminds what the quality of "king's printer" meant in France during the Ancien Régime, and gives then the list of the printers known as "king's printers for music" from the XVth century onwards. The following question is then addresed : was a king's printer bound to print the music of the king's music (Ecurie, Chapelle, Chambre) ? Two case studies are given : the librettos of the royal ballets, which can be assimilated to the royal edicts (both being given or performed by the king in a precise time and place), and the printed scores of Lully operas, which took a proeminent place in music collections, as a tool of glorification of the king.
